It is often times very difficult to decipher why you are watching the news cast that you are. Maybe you are watching a local burglary, yet on that same day two people were killed in a car crash. So who decides which story goes in front of the public? Good question. To me, people who decide what go in the news are the people that go to school, get an education in broadcast journalism, and go out into the world and utilize their education. However, I still think the question of why are some things broadcasted over others is a great, somewhat mysterious, question. Because there are so many things that go on in our fast paced world yet no one ever hears about them because the media chooses something else to show us. I think that it is the media's way of swaying our thoughts and opinions in the ways that they want us to. It is up for you the watcher to form and make your own thoughts and opinions, regardless of what you are shown on television.

The whole statement on representing different interests of people of color is a bit confusing to me...Just because you aren't the same color as someone doesn't mean you dont have the same interest as someone. Yes a black person might get tired of watching an all white news channel but of all of the news channels I've ever watched I've always seen white, black, asian, etc. I don't see a problem with having an all black news station as long as there is no problem with having an all white news station. It is a two way street. In order to increase the mainstream medias interest I think that they should take polls on their websites of what kind of news people are wanting to see. They should also have a hotline for people to call when something newsworthy happens so people can call it in and suggest it to the stations. That way a variety of people will call in with different angles of stories.

The war, which I am assuming we're talking about 9/11 since thats what pretty much the whole video was about, was originally reported through newscasts as a terrorist attack on our nation. It showed horrible clips of the twin towers and of the city itself. The news, furthermore, the reporters, instilled a very strong sense of patriatism to the nation. The video talked about how some reporters were wearing American flag pins on their lapels. But overall they sense of unity and patriotism increased drastically.

I know that recently I have been hearing a lot about proposition eight. I don't know that there have been social protests about it but there has definitely been a lot of news coverage on it. At one point, there was also a lot of news coverage on people who wanted the war in Iraq to end. I have seen protestors for that on tv multiple times. I think that if the story supports what the news cast is reporting, then they will show it, but if it doesnt, then they probably won't.

From all that I have read and seen on the media and the Civil Rights Movement I feel like the media intensified the whole ordeal. All the way from sit ins, to freedom writers, the media was there to capture a large majority of all of the different incidents that went on. I feel that all of these graphic shots of the events had to of had some sort of impact on the public. I think the impact that the media had on the Civil Rights was probably negative and positive. I think it portrayed it in a positive aspect because it showed the President signing off on bills to try to reform and improve what was taking place, but in a negative aspect it showed all of the horrible things taking place at that time.

As talked about above, I can't quite say who sets the news agenda. People that set it use things that they like, that they care about and that will support what they are trying to say. Therefore, if they do not care about some story that meant the world to someone else, that person is going to get mad and/or offended. But with a world of billions of people, not everyone is always going to get to see and hear what they want. Therefore, if racial minorities feel inferior in the news, then more power to them to make their own news station. I think its a great idea. As for the war, I definitely think that more aspects of the war need to be shown. We are always shown the horrible negative events and images that are going on instead of the positive things. However, I definitely think we do need to see the negative aspect of it to get the reality of what our soldiers are doing over there.

I was and was not somewhat surprised by all of the racial and gender stereotyping that goes on in the media today. We are all constantly bombarded by so much clutter each day that it is as if we have all almost become somewhat immune to it, sadly enough. We all experience stereotyping so much that we feel like it is supposed to be that way and maybe we don't know any better? I wish it were different but it just seems to be the world we live in today.

When I personally experience gender stereotyping i get extremely defensive and mad. I am very opnionated and that is one area that I am definitely not ashamed to state my opinions and feelings about. I think that gender stereotyping is wrong and should not be taken by anyone. I am so tired of hearing that I can or cannot do this or that because I am a female. So many women in this world have made history becuase of their actions. They have left footprints in our world history books becuase of the accomplishments they did. So saying that women can and can't do certain things is bogus. I think and encourage all women to do whatever their heart desires. People think it's "weird' for a girl to be a brain surgeon or for a girl to be a pilot of a commercial airline. Well why? Why is it weird for a female to accomplish her dreams? Why is it weird for her to have gone through so much school and hard times to do what she wants to do? I think it is amazing to see women succeed in what is called a "mans field." And I think it is wonderful when women want to have a job even when they have children. That they do not have to be the stereotypical house wife.

I definitley see the continuous images and how the do and do not affect people. I think that we are all affected by it in some shape or anything but we often times do not realize it. I think that we are so use to it that we just take it. Which is sad. For instance, my mom works in an office with all men and she is often times mistaken as the "secretary" simply because she is a female. When in all reality she is one of the top employees in the company! Now go figure. If a man were to be called the secretary because he was in an office building full of women all hell would break loose. I also like the example of girls are supposed to have the Paris Hilton "purse dog" amd that guys are supposed to have golden retreivers and labs, the more manly dogs. Well, my dad who lives in Colorado was planning on getting a golden retriever to go hiking with him and because he has always loved goldens. Well when I got my yorkie poo puppy he fell in LOVE with her. He made fun of me in the beginning for having a dog that ended in "poo" but little did he know he was about to own one as well! After falling in love with my dog, plans for the golden retriever went out the window. The next thing I know he is checking the paper daily for yorkie poos in colorado. He now owns one and it is like his third child, ha. I hear stories about the dog over the phone. He also now takes the dog hiking with him. So I think that gender stereotyping also definitely goes both ways.

Tim Wise Blog assignment

After viewing this video, I was a bit confused as to what he was talking about with "privilege." I guess he was trying to say that some African Americans feel underprivileged compared to whites. I like the part where he talked about typing in your computer "over privileged" and that a red line would go under it. However, when I think of privilege, I think everyone in the United States is privileged. We all live in an amazing country and are free people, and that in itself is something to be proud of and consider a HUGE privilege. I think people look waaaay too into "privilege" and take it to the nitty gritty. There is always going to be someone richer than you or prettier than you, but there is also always someone who is less fortunate than you and I don't think that people realize that enough.

When talking about how the media portrays privilege I think that they definitely show it in different aspects. For instance, they might show someone winning a huge award, and someone watching it might feel that they aren't privileged enough to win something like that. The news also might show people in poverty who's home was burnt by a fire, and this might make people feel like they are more privileged than them. It all depends on how you view yourself and others around you.

Privileges
1. My friend made a better grade on me than a test which can make me feel underprivileged.
2. I see people with nicer cars than mine which can make me feel under privileged.
3. I have 2 wonderful jobs that make me feel privileged.
4. My neighborhood was badly hit by the tornadoes but my house was luckily spared which made me feel very privileged.
5. I am getting to go to Mardi Gras next weekend and I feel very privileged to have that opportunity.
6. I am a student at the University of Oklahoma which makes me feel privileged since some people don't have the opportunity to go to school
7. I am blessed with an amazing family which makes me feel privileged.
8. I also have a wonderful group of friends which makes me feel privileged.

As for the one drop rule, I do think that society still believes in it. I think that people who have a white mom and an African American dad, that they maybe don't know exactly where they fit in.

In regards to the responsibility of knowledge idea, I think that it depends on the knowledge and your beliefs. I think that that is a very broad aspect saying when you find something out you need to change your behavior. Well a lot of people have beliefs and morals that they might not want to change, just because something was found out. But if it is something worth changing your behavior then by all means I definitely think you should. I think everyone should always try to look at both sides of everything.

Tim Wise

This week I decided to do my self reflection on Tim Wise. I thought this would be an appropriate blog since we just watched a film over him in class tonight. To be honest, I was somewhat offended by the video. I felt that the whole time he was making his speech he was completely trash talking white people. Being a white female, I took offense to it. I tried to be open minded and see where he was coming from on some of his remarks, but for most of his "facts" that he told, he had NO supporting evidence, no source from where he got the information, so it made it hard to even listen because of that. For instance, when he spoke about the war in Iraq he said that majority of blacks did not want to go to Iraq and kept saying that we should not go over there and that 2/3 of whites wanted to go there. Where did he get these stats??? If you are going to make that bold of a statement then you definitely need to note where you got those numbers from. And if no blacks wanted to go over there, then how come we have brave black soldiers fighting over there as we speak? They are just as worthy of our praise and respect as the white soldiers are. He also went on to talk about Hurricane Katrina. I honestly had kind of tuned him out a little bit at this point because I was getting very offended but he said something about how the blacks received a lot of blame but for the most part it was the white man who had something to do with the levees funds or something to that sorts fault and that the whites should have received a lot more blame for it. SAYS WHO?? How can you blame something like that on a race? I know this blog sounds like I am ranting and raving about the video, but I really did try to listen to him and take in what he had to say. I know that he was just trying to prove some good points, but for the most part I was offended.

Superbowl Commercials

For my first self reflection blog I decided to write about a Superbowl ad that dealt with race. The first one that came to my mind was the one from E-Trade that had the Caucasian baby and the African American baby. There really was not anything bad about the commercial, and I actually think those commercials are pretty comical, but just the fact that they had the white and African American baby was pretty comical to me. It was like they had to incorporate both races so that they would not be scrutinized for only having white babies. However, they might have been trying to show that E-trade is for all races, and that anyone can apply, regardless of race. However, I did find it weird that they did not have a female baby. I kind of wonder why they chose two male babies, and not a male and female baby? Also, the white male baby seemed to be the intelligent, serious one while the African American baby was singing and trying to make the situation a little more light hearted.
Another commercial that caught my attention in regards to gender was the Pepsi Cola commercial that had all of these different clips of men getting hurt really badly, for example, having a bowling ball dropped on their head, having a piece of wood go flying through the air and hit their back. Yet, all of them said "I'm fine" after having all of these horrible things happen to them. Then at the end of the commercial it says "Men can take anything except the taste of diet cola." So i saw this as a weird thing because first of all, they did not show women at all, so are they saying women cannot take anything? Second of all, this was a DIET cola commercial, and most of the time you would think of a woman drinking a diet cola. However, this one is "Diet Pepsi Max, the first diet drink for men." I find this kind of confusing because are men not supposed to drink other diet sodas? And are they implying that women can't drink this diet drink since it's "for men?"
Overall, I was not too impressed with the Superbowl commercials this year in terms of comical ones, but for the most part they were okay.

Kelsey's Self Bio

My name is Kelsey Roxanne Pennell and I was born in California but raised in Oklahoma. I have one older brother, Nicholas, who is 25 and lives in Breckenridge Colorado. I am currently a broadcast journalism major and am taking 13 hours this semester. I decided to take this class because it was an elective that was offered for my major and I have heard good things about it so I figured I would take it. My favorite homework assignment was a history paper I had to write about a member of my family. I really enjoyed it because I learned so much about my grandma that I never knew before. My least favorite homework assignment was a translating a focus group interview because it was extremely long and took a lengthy amount of time. I don't mind working in groups but I would rather work on my own for the most part. I don't exactly have a favorite type of music because I love all music, so it is extremely hard for me to have a favorite song. But if I had to pick one song it would probably be "Call the Man" by Celine Dion. It is an old song of hers but it is a gorgeous song with great lyrics and I think she has one of the best voices of all time. The last movie I saw was Defiance. It was a true story about WWII and it was amazing, I definitely recommend it. The secretary of state is Hillary Rodham Clinton, and yes embarassingly enough I did google it...so sad. I don't really mind public speaking, but I am not really fond of it. I have never posted/written a blog but I am actually looking forward to this! The three biggest issues facing the United States in 2009 in my opinion would be our economy, the war in Iraq, and foreign affairs. My philosophy for life is to try to always take a step back and realize how short of a time we have here on earth. Take nothing for granted, and don't regret anything. Everyone makes mistakes, but its the only and best way to learn. I get stressed out very very easily so I'm trying to work on that this year. I am a member of Kappa Alpha Theta on campus and I participate in things through my sorority. I also have two jobs this semester. I work at Shoetopia, which is a shoe store on Campus Corner, and I have an internship with Universal Studios as a movie rep on campus. Joe Foote is the dean of the college of Journalism, David Craig is the associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies. Buddy Wiedemann is the IT director for the Gaylord College of journalism and Cat Bark is the librarian at Gaylord. My favorite thing about OU is football season. It is such a fun time of year, and we have an amazing team.
