Race, Gender & Media

Race gender and media is something that we are bombarded with everyday. Although we may be unaware of exactly how much media we are exposed to on a daily basis, our entire lives revolve around the media. Whether we are on the internet, watching television, listening to the radio, reading a magazine etc., we are constantly interacting with the media. We rely on it for almost everything we do. It is sad to say, but it is hard to imagine what we did before the internet. It is the media that people go to for fast, immediate answers. However, a lot of people seem to be stuck in their own little "race" bubble or gender bubble and have skewed views of how other people really are. Regardless of if you are white, black, Asian, etc., it is important to be aware of everyone and not just a certain angle on that certain race.

While interacting with all of these different media vehicles, we are exposed to all different kinds of races and and also to gender differences. However, a lot of times, we overlook a lot of the different races. And some people feel that minorities are underrepresented in the news and/or media. I think that it is very important for journalists and reporters to do be extremely careful on what stories they are writing and reporting about when dealing with minorities. They need to realize that many people believe everything they see and hear on the news, internet, radio etc. and so they need to be careful the angle of their stories. Angles of stories can make all the difference in the world, but especially when dealing with gender and races.

Taking this class had made me realize how important race and gender are in media perception. I had never really given it as much deep thought as I do now. I think it is vitally important to realize how people are portrayed in the media and how it effects people's outlooks. This class has also taught me on how we all really need to open our eyes to things that are going on in the world and to not be locked in a little bubble of how you look at things. The world is constantly changing and it is important for us as journalists, PR practitioners, advertising specialists etc., to also keep our minds going and possibly even changing along with the times.

Blogging in this class has been very beneficial. I think that it helps all of us to voice our opinions and let them be seen by our fellow classmates. I think it is also beneficial to compare and contrast our opinions to those of our classmates. It helps you to get a different outlook on something you might not have thought about before. Not everyone speaks up in class so it is a way for all of us to talk with each other outside of class about things going on in the world and about issues that will most likely affect us in our future careers. It has also helped us to realize how everything has become extremely multimedia and that our careers are going to be consumed by multimedia. I also think that blogging helps many people express their ideas that they normally would not. It is a lot easier for some people to express thoughts and feelings when you can type them. The blogging assignments have also gotten us out of our normal realms and has helped us to explore many different aspects of race, gender and media that we normally would not.

1. Pleasure P- Boyfriend #2

This video was extremely "sex" oriented. It is primarily about a boy trying to charm his new girlfriend and telling her that he can treat her better than her first boyfriend. And it seems that he is wanting to treat her better in bed...(not to be inappropriate!) But a lot of the video takes place on the bed.

2. Slick Rick- Children's Story
http://www.nutsie.com/song/Children%27s%20Story/4015391?artist_id=2908206&album_id=4015388

This video was quite peculiar...It started off by three children asking Slick Rick to tell them a bedtime story. The bedtime story ends up being about a guy that becomes obsessed with stealing and he becomes really good at it. He one day gets caught by the police and put in jail but he gets the keys and escapes. The whole video was made to be a humorous video.

3. The Dream- Rockin that Thang
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxTFNXhb1kY

This video is all about him wanting a girls body. He is infatuated with the girl in the video and seems to enjoy watching her "shake that thang." He talks about wanting to change her last name and get her into bed...

4. Talib Kweli- Get By
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77zxCAfVeD8

This video is talking about everything that people must overcome on a day by day basis just to "get by." It shows a single mother of three, he talks about living in a trailer park, quitting smoking and drinking, just to get by.

5. Iglu & Hartly- In This City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahqPu8ziGi0&feature=channel

This video is about a group of guys who are comfortable where they are. It shows them hanging out in the streets, skateboarding, having a beer at a bar, and just being comfortable in their city. It says "I won't disappear in this city" and I took that as how they feel that they won't just be another face in the crowd in this city because they feel that this is where they belong.

Three advertisements that I have heard on hip-hop stations are Advanced Laser Center in Oklahoma, Ticket Master and Verizon Wireless. I heard all of these quite frequently.

You can also find the influence of hip hop in the media such as music videos on MTV and VH1 and award shows such as the MTV music awards. You can also see hip hop in magazines in the pictures they show of different hip hop bands.

I feel like "sex" has been a big part of hip hop culture. A lot of songs are somehow based around sexual meanings or interpretations and have also been somewhat controversial in the news/public.

My dad LOVED rock and roll and was a huge Led Zeppelin fan. He also liked R & B and listened to Van Morrison, and my mom loved R & B and her one of her favorite singers was Petula Clark who sand "downtown."

Hip hop has become a huge part of our culture. It has taken over the music industry with a new band coming out of the woodwork almost everyday it seems like. Many of our parents seem to not care for hip hop because of its sexual content and images. It is very racy and some of the language and lyrics used seem "inappropriate" to parents. I personally enjoy some hip hop and some I do not, as with all music. I love all music in general. I think it depends on what kind of mood you are in for what you listen to. But I definitely think that hip hop has had its way of bringing about new images in the media. Images including: big booties, mid drift, extremely short shorts, provocative dancing, bed scenes etc. Thus, some parents are trying to screen what their young children are watching on both the television and the computer. I personally don't think that things are going to get better with it..I think it will only continue to get worse just because that is the way our culture has seem to become accustomed to.

For this advertising assignment I looked at the placement of women in ads. I think that women in ads are displayed in a negative way in a lot of them so that is what I focused on.

1. GQ magazine-There is a sketchers ad where a girl, dressed in really short shorts, a mid-drift top that is very tight and shows a lot of her stomach. She is hanging on a guy and looking at him in a seductive way and he is not even looking at her. He's looking straight ahead at the camera with his hands by his side. I think this was negative towards women because it makes her look desperate and as if he does not even know she is there.

2. Pro Active Commercial-I saw a Pro Active commercial on TV and the majority of the people in the commercial were women. I feel like this was saying that its just the majority of women who have acne problems when in reality boys have just as many problems.

3. US Weekly magazine-It was a Small Altoids ad and it shows just the back of a girl holding a box of mints and the caption says "When you lean in make sure he doesn't lean out."

4. J. Crew clothing ad in a store-In a J.Crew store there was an ad for shoes by the shoe section but the ad only showed a girl from the waist down. I found this weird that they couldn't include her face?

5. Progressive Commercial- in this commercial it was only men buying insurance for cars and boats and everything and the employee was a woman. I found this degrading because I think it shows that women are incompetent to buy insurance for things and that it's a "mans job."

6. Reality TV-American Idol
7. People magazine/and website
8. The Oklahoma Daily
9. Glamour magazine
10. Ellen Degenerous show Tuesday morning at 9a.m.

I found this assignment to be very eye opening. I do not think we realize how women are portrayed in the media. I think we are all very immune to the way women are depicted and treated in ads. There are so many ads in the media today that show one woman surrounded by tons of men, or half of a female will be cut out of the ad while the whole body of the man is in it. Women are often times made to look very vulnerable and helpless in ads as well. Also in ads, the majority of women are beautiful, flawless, and extremely skinny. However, most of us do not take the time to stop and realize how much photoshop can actually do to a person's looks. A woman can made to be 10 lbs lighter with just the click of a mouse. They can also have all of their blemishes and cellulite removed with just the click of the mouse as well. These things we do not often enough sit and think about but instead think we are not ever going to be as pretty or skinny as we "need/should" be. Other than the Dove commercials and advertisements I cannot think of any other advertisements that portray women who are not bone thin. I think the Dove commercials are great and should be showed way more often. They show norman, average, CURVY women. These type of ads need and should be shown far more often. These are the kinds of images that need to be embedded in the minds of young girls and women today. Women need to be shown that bone thin is not normal and that curves are much sexier. But how do we get this to happen?

It is often times very difficult to decipher why you are watching the news cast that you are. Maybe you are watching a local burglary, yet on that same day two people were killed in a car crash. So who decides which story goes in front of the public? Good question. To me, people who decide what go in the news are the people that go to school, get an education in broadcast journalism, and go out into the world and utilize their education. However, I still think the question of why are some things broadcasted over others is a great, somewhat mysterious, question. Because there are so many things that go on in our fast paced world yet no one ever hears about them because the media chooses something else to show us. I think that it is the media's way of swaying our thoughts and opinions in the ways that they want us to. It is up for you the watcher to form and make your own thoughts and opinions, regardless of what you are shown on television.

The whole statement on representing different interests of people of color is a bit confusing to me...Just because you aren't the same color as someone doesn't mean you dont have the same interest as someone. Yes a black person might get tired of watching an all white news channel but of all of the news channels I've ever watched I've always seen white, black, asian, etc. I don't see a problem with having an all black news station as long as there is no problem with having an all white news station. It is a two way street. In order to increase the mainstream medias interest I think that they should take polls on their websites of what kind of news people are wanting to see. They should also have a hotline for people to call when something newsworthy happens so people can call it in and suggest it to the stations. That way a variety of people will call in with different angles of stories.

The war, which I am assuming we're talking about 9/11 since thats what pretty much the whole video was about, was originally reported through newscasts as a terrorist attack on our nation. It showed horrible clips of the twin towers and of the city itself. The news, furthermore, the reporters, instilled a very strong sense of patriatism to the nation. The video talked about how some reporters were wearing American flag pins on their lapels. But overall they sense of unity and patriotism increased drastically.

I know that recently I have been hearing a lot about proposition eight. I don't know that there have been social protests about it but there has definitely been a lot of news coverage on it. At one point, there was also a lot of news coverage on people who wanted the war in Iraq to end. I have seen protestors for that on tv multiple times. I think that if the story supports what the news cast is reporting, then they will show it, but if it doesnt, then they probably won't.

From all that I have read and seen on the media and the Civil Rights Movement I feel like the media intensified the whole ordeal. All the way from sit ins, to freedom writers, the media was there to capture a large majority of all of the different incidents that went on. I feel that all of these graphic shots of the events had to of had some sort of impact on the public. I think the impact that the media had on the Civil Rights was probably negative and positive. I think it portrayed it in a positive aspect because it showed the President signing off on bills to try to reform and improve what was taking place, but in a negative aspect it showed all of the horrible things taking place at that time.

As talked about above, I can't quite say who sets the news agenda. People that set it use things that they like, that they care about and that will support what they are trying to say. Therefore, if they do not care about some story that meant the world to someone else, that person is going to get mad and/or offended. But with a world of billions of people, not everyone is always going to get to see and hear what they want. Therefore, if racial minorities feel inferior in the news, then more power to them to make their own news station. I think its a great idea. As for the war, I definitely think that more aspects of the war need to be shown. We are always shown the horrible negative events and images that are going on instead of the positive things. However, I definitely think we do need to see the negative aspect of it to get the reality of what our soldiers are doing over there.

I was and was not somewhat surprised by all of the racial and gender stereotyping that goes on in the media today. We are all constantly bombarded by so much clutter each day that it is as if we have all almost become somewhat immune to it, sadly enough. We all experience stereotyping so much that we feel like it is supposed to be that way and maybe we don't know any better? I wish it were different but it just seems to be the world we live in today.

When I personally experience gender stereotyping i get extremely defensive and mad. I am very opnionated and that is one area that I am definitely not ashamed to state my opinions and feelings about. I think that gender stereotyping is wrong and should not be taken by anyone. I am so tired of hearing that I can or cannot do this or that because I am a female. So many women in this world have made history becuase of their actions. They have left footprints in our world history books becuase of the accomplishments they did. So saying that women can and can't do certain things is bogus. I think and encourage all women to do whatever their heart desires. People think it's "weird' for a girl to be a brain surgeon or for a girl to be a pilot of a commercial airline. Well why? Why is it weird for a female to accomplish her dreams? Why is it weird for her to have gone through so much school and hard times to do what she wants to do? I think it is amazing to see women succeed in what is called a "mans field." And I think it is wonderful when women want to have a job even when they have children. That they do not have to be the stereotypical house wife.

I definitley see the continuous images and how the do and do not affect people. I think that we are all affected by it in some shape or anything but we often times do not realize it. I think that we are so use to it that we just take it. Which is sad. For instance, my mom works in an office with all men and she is often times mistaken as the "secretary" simply because she is a female. When in all reality she is one of the top employees in the company! Now go figure. If a man were to be called the secretary because he was in an office building full of women all hell would break loose. I also like the example of girls are supposed to have the Paris Hilton "purse dog" amd that guys are supposed to have golden retreivers and labs, the more manly dogs. Well, my dad who lives in Colorado was planning on getting a golden retriever to go hiking with him and because he has always loved goldens. Well when I got my yorkie poo puppy he fell in LOVE with her. He made fun of me in the beginning for having a dog that ended in "poo" but little did he know he was about to own one as well! After falling in love with my dog, plans for the golden retriever went out the window. The next thing I know he is checking the paper daily for yorkie poos in colorado. He now owns one and it is like his third child, ha. I hear stories about the dog over the phone. He also now takes the dog hiking with him. So I think that gender stereotyping also definitely goes both ways.

Tim Wise Blog assignment

After viewing this video, I was a bit confused as to what he was talking about with "privilege." I guess he was trying to say that some African Americans feel underprivileged compared to whites. I like the part where he talked about typing in your computer "over privileged" and that a red line would go under it. However, when I think of privilege, I think everyone in the United States is privileged. We all live in an amazing country and are free people, and that in itself is something to be proud of and consider a HUGE privilege. I think people look waaaay too into "privilege" and take it to the nitty gritty. There is always going to be someone richer than you or prettier than you, but there is also always someone who is less fortunate than you and I don't think that people realize that enough.

When talking about how the media portrays privilege I think that they definitely show it in different aspects. For instance, they might show someone winning a huge award, and someone watching it might feel that they aren't privileged enough to win something like that. The news also might show people in poverty who's home was burnt by a fire, and this might make people feel like they are more privileged than them. It all depends on how you view yourself and others around you.

Privileges
1. My friend made a better grade on me than a test which can make me feel underprivileged.
2. I see people with nicer cars than mine which can make me feel under privileged.
3. I have 2 wonderful jobs that make me feel privileged.
4. My neighborhood was badly hit by the tornadoes but my house was luckily spared which made me feel very privileged.
5. I am getting to go to Mardi Gras next weekend and I feel very privileged to have that opportunity.
6. I am a student at the University of Oklahoma which makes me feel privileged since some people don't have the opportunity to go to school
7. I am blessed with an amazing family which makes me feel privileged.
8. I also have a wonderful group of friends which makes me feel privileged.

As for the one drop rule, I do think that society still believes in it. I think that people who have a white mom and an African American dad, that they maybe don't know exactly where they fit in.

In regards to the responsibility of knowledge idea, I think that it depends on the knowledge and your beliefs. I think that that is a very broad aspect saying when you find something out you need to change your behavior. Well a lot of people have beliefs and morals that they might not want to change, just because something was found out. But if it is something worth changing your behavior then by all means I definitely think you should. I think everyone should always try to look at both sides of everything.
